Public Update 2014

Public Update – December 2014 The Northern Peninsula Regional Service Board continues to move forward with Fire Services in the Straits area on the Northern Peninsula.  We want to update residents and business owners of what we have been doing to provide a more enhanced emergency service to the residence in our service area. Our service area for Fire and Emergency services is as follows:  Anchor Point to Eddie’s Cove East (13 communities) We have approximately 30 trained, committed and active emergency service volunteers and are actively recruiting new members. We have 2 pumper trucks, 1 stationed in Flower’s Cove and 1 stationed in Green Island Cove – in order to provide better response times. July 2015 (tentative) the dept. will receive a new Rescue Pumper Truck, to better provide expected Fire Suppression for the 13 communities and Vehicle Technical Rescue for 26 communities. We have a Fire Rescue truck, 2009 Chevy Silverado, compliments of Nalcor donated to the fire dept. in 2013.  Firefighters raised the funds needed to convert the noted vehicle into an emergency response unit. We have a Breathing Air Compressor, used to re-fill firefighters breathing cylinders, Rescue Boggan, 16ft Enclosed Trailer, to assist in transporting emergency equipment throughout the region, Full set of Hydraulic Tools – also known as, “the Jaws of Life”, Porta Tank, Thermal Imaging camera and Air Lift Bags, etc… These are all essential pieces of equipment to effectively operate and provide emergency services to the residence. An application has been submitted to Gov. to seek funding to build an extension of 28 x 44 on the Fire Hall in Flower’s Cove. We will continue our efforts with Fire and Life safety Inspections of all businesses in our area, in order to prevent the loss of life and property damages. Our Fire Dept. is now prepared for the 911 roll out which is to take place in December 2014. You can continue to use our direct emergency line at 456-3345. We would like to thank Fire & Emergency Services, Municipal Affairs, IGA, Residents, Businesses, local Lion’s Clubs and Lioness, other non-profit groups, Persons of Interest, and last but not least, 30 dedicated Firefighters. Because of the continued financial support of the above mentioned contributors we were able to provide fire and emergency services with no increase in fees for 2014 and 2015! Due to the increase in operational cost, residents can expect to see a 5% fee increase for 2016. NorPen and the Strait’s Fire Dept. will continue to work with a commitment toward providing efficient and effective Fire and Emergency Services to all residents in this Region. For inquiries and/or recommendations please see contact information above.
