Curbside Service Policies

Curbside Collection Reminder

Waste Collection Policy Reminder

Northern Peninsula Regional Service Board (NorPen) would like to thank residents for their cooperation regarding waste collection.

NorPen’s policy on waste collection is curbside (maximum of 10 ft. from edge of pavement).

Employee and public safety must be top priority while providing this service.  Therefore, we are asking residents to respect and support this policy to ensure the health and safety of all involved.

Please note that the focus is the placement of waste to the curb and not placement of bins.  This can be done by using stationary bins, waste covered by a blanket, roll out bins etc. Waste has to be within 10ft of the edge of the pavement by 8:00 a.m. on collection day.

Please see our website (www.norpenservices.ca) for further information and add your e-mail address to our list of subscribers to receive updates.

NorPen would like to thank all residents for following this policy for waste collection.

Businesses/organizations must follow Residential Collection Guidelines outlined below with the following exception:

Businesses or organizations having waste collected will not be required to place waste to the curb if the property on which the business/organization is located can be accessed by the collector without encroachment on private property.

Curbside waste is collected year-round, once per week. For storm days and holidays the next possible collection day will be used. Changes to regular schedule will be announced @ norpenservices.ca and Norpen Facebook page (Norpen Waste) for all residents, and @ 709-454-3336 for residents of Subregions 1, 2, and 3.

Residential Collection Guidelines

•  Waste must be in standard size garbage bags - 'grocery bags', 'kitchen catchers' and 'large yard' waste bags are not acceptable.

•  Waste is to be at the curb (within 10 feet of the edge of pavement) by 8:00 a.m. on collection day.

•  Waste must be covered.

•  If waste bins are used for collection at the curb, they must be kept clean and tidy.

•  Each bag must not exceed 35 pounds.

•  Garbage bags must be tied before placing them at the curb.

•  Broken glass, sharps, knives, and syringes must be clearly marked and packaged in a puncture-proof container. The marked container is to be placed at the curb separate from garbage bags.

•  Containers of liquid, including paint will not be collected. Empty or dried out paint cans can be placed in a regular garbage bag with other household waste.

•  Hazardous waste will not be collected; items, liquids or materials can be taken to the landfill site for disposal.

•  Electronic waste such as televisions, computers, computer accessories, stereos, stereo components, etc. will not be taken during regular waste collection. These items can be taken to the landfill site for recycling.

•  Ashes will not be collected.

•  Cardboard must be put in tied up bags (standard garbage bags) or broken down and bundled, to measure no more than 2 feet by 2 feet by 1 foot.

•  If residents are not in compliance with waste collection regulations, waste can be refused. For the first infraction, waste will be taken and a tag will be left noting the infraction.  If the problem is not rectified on the following collection day, then waste will be refused.

WHY Curbside Collection - Risk of injury for sole driver collecting your waste. Sometimes the Collector has to walk up to 50 feet, for 500 houses a day. This could happen 3 or more times per house if there are 5 bags or more. This equates to cover over 1500 trips a day carrying 30 - 35 lbs each trip. This is unreasonable to expect of any one person. If an injury occures due to unreasonable/unsafe work conditions, that cost goes back to residents.
