How To Compost
1. Build a compost bin (or buy one from NorPen).
2. Place your outdoor bin in a sunny, easily accessible spot with good drainage.
3. Add organic waste. Alternate between layers of 'brown' and 'green' organic materials.
4. Turn the pile. Turn and mix your pile after you add new material. Your compost pile should be as moist as a wrungout sponge.
What Can Be Composted
Organic waste can be categorized as 'brown' or 'green' materials. Alternate between balanced layer of each when adding waste to your bin.
Tip: Add brown material if your pile is too wet and add water and green material if it is too dry. Store organic kitchen waste under your sink in a small, covered container. Add to your outdoor bin once or twice a week.

Dried Leaves • Dried & Untreated Grass Clippings • Non-diseased Plants, Twigs & Small Branches • Woodchips & Sawdust (from untreated wood) • Rice, Oats & Other Grains • Paper (Newspaper, Paper Towels, Toilet Paper Rolls & Cereal Boxes) • Dried Corn Stalks • Pasta (no sauces or oils) • Peanut Shells • Bread & Other Baked Goods

The Backyard Composting Program was initiated by Multi Materials Stewardship Board (MMSB) to offer compost bins at a reduced rate along with an opportunity for residents to participate in an educational training session on successful backyard composting.
Organic waste makes up as much as 30% of all the waste generated in Newfoundland and Labrador. Composting is important, it's easy - and the end result will help your garden grow!
We all know that compost soil is great for our gardens, but there are also many environmental benefits to backyard composting. It reduces the amount of waste sent to the landfill, greenhouse gas emissions, pollution and the need for chemical fertilizers and pesticides.
Partnering with MMSB provided an opportunity to purchase compost bins for just $21 + tax. Normally backyard compost bins retail between $50 and $70. Also, educational training is provided by NorPen, free of charge. Our goal is to make composting as easy as possible to ensure that those who purchase the bins become committed users who actively divert 30% of their waste.
This is a promotional offer available to residents within the boundaries of the Northern Peninsula Regional Service Board. Compost bins can be purchased by contacting the office at (709) 454-3110 or via email.
